LittleBigPlanet Impressions (PSP)

LittleBigPlanet on PS3 was a landmark in the creativity of videogames. No longer were you restrained to the levels within the game – now you could play levels upon levels created by the very gamers that play the game.
With such a massive scope, I thought that LittleBigPlanet on the PSP would be impossible to pull off. With the release of the demo on the PSN Store this past week, I realized just how wrong I was.
The demo gives you two levels to work with, disregarding the tutorial level. This first level is a simple one, dragging you through an Australian-style setting; having you jump across rocks, trees, and kangaroos.
The second level is just a bonus level, where you ride a surfboard for as long as you can while jumping and collecting points. The diversity between the two levels in the demo really shows you what the game can do. Anything is possible in LittleBigPlanet, after all.
You, of course, again play as Sackboy, the loveable sack of joy. You can customize him with different cloth patterns, hats, clothing – just like the PS3 game. There will also be downloadable stuff for your Sackboy on the PSN Store, giving you no excuse to not dress up your little guy.
The controls were just as good, if not better, than the PS3 game. The jumping seems tighter than the PS3 version, which is good considering how “floaty” it originally felt. The platforming in the PSP version leaves a little to be desired, however, though it’s understandable due to the control limitations.
The graphics are top notch for PSP, with every inch of the maps and character models looking stellar.
Although I can’t vouch for multiplayer, as it wasn’t in the demo, the full game promises full level sharing. However, no two player is available for the game, which is a bummer considering half the fun of the PS3 version was sharing your creations with a friend. Luckily, you’ll still be able to do so with level sharing, just not with each other at the same time.
LittleBigPlanet PSP is an incredible accomplishment when considering its numerous similarities with the PS3 version. This truly is a portable LittleBigPlanet, and very few things could have made it even better than it already is. The game releases today with the early Thanksgiving PSN Store update – so be sure to pick it up, dig in, and expand your imagination!
