What's With This Retro Nonsense?

[Editor's Note: We Respect our writers-- we publish opinions/editorials that may be controversial, like this one. Though be aware this is not the opinion of every writer at No More Game Blogs. Please try to be respectful in your comments]

I like polygons. Really, the more, the better. Bump-mapping, tesselation, high-definition rendering, pixel shading, shaded vertexes, you name it. Love them all. The better a game looks, well, the better.

With that in mind, I honestly can't understand the desire that some people have to revert back to the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) era.

If we look at a recent example, Mega Man 10, retro fans will be able to rejoice. Following the success of the equally retro Mega Man 9, Capcom went ahead and created an entirely new, old game. Specifically designed to emulate the retro 8-bit stylings of the older Mega Man games, Mega Man 10 features the same sprite graphics, specially emulated blips, beeps, boops and buzzes for sound and original 1987 style gameplay.

Yup, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

To me, there is nothing in a retro title like this that appeals. Retro games in general hold very little appeal to me, and I don't see the point. Graphics? Nope. Sound? Nope. Gameplay? Nope. Give me HD 1080p graphics; 5.1 DTS sound and the most cutting edge gameplay and I'll be happy. Of course, if playing new games that aspire to the lofty standards set by 80's video games makes you happy, then by all means, indulge your nostalgic kick.

There is, however, one aspect of the game that has reinvented itself for the modern era, and that is the DLC concept. In addition to buying the game for eight bucks (or whatever price it is), you can pick up more characters, game modes and levels, eventually paying more for the DLC than you did for the original game. What a bargin!

As I've said many times before in this article, retro does nothing for me. I'd much rather play this year's new releases that actually acknowledge that they are new releases than buy a game that is pretending that it was made in the past. Also as I've said before, if playing retro games makes you happy, then go ahead. I'd sure hate to live in a world with no diversity, and where all games looked, sounded and played exactly the same.

The desire to relive the past is a sensation that is strange to me. The present is so bright that any thoughts of the past simply pale in comparison.

That's my views on the subject. What do you think? Are retro games the next big thing or should they stay back in the past? Let us know your opinions in the comments.

Well I think it's debatable weather or not the gameplay is bad just because the game looks dated. I mean tons of "oldschool" or "retro games" play better then a lot of HD games. The main reason is nostalgia alot of gamers grew up on these games and have a fondness for them looking 8bit, 16bit,32bit,64bit etc. Plus come on majority of games are polygons now (back in the day we called it 3d if it had polygons...now polygons are the norm and 3d means 3d lol) so if a couple of games or dlc games go retro why is that a bad thing?

There are two types of "retro" games, one are limited due to the era of technology they were created, and games like Retro Game Challenge that sorta emulate that classic style. Pixel art has nothing to do with these games, as a good game will stand the test of time; 8-bit or not. I think 2D style of game play is a valid form that was prematurely abandoned by game developers.

Sounds like someone needs to get off their high horse. You'd rather play games like damnation, stormrise, or one of the 100 other shitty games that came out recently?

Solid gameplay is more important than graphics. That and the soundtrack for megaman kicks ass.

I suppose I will have to respectfully disagree

I just started playing cave story and it's amazing. Totally 2d pixel art and it looks great. http://www.brainygamer.com/the_brainy_gamer/2010/03/the-cave-story-story.html
