From the floor of the New York Comic Con, I was able to take a close look at singleplayer gameplay from the highly awaited Mass Effect 3. Having played both previous games in the series, while the gameplay changed sharply from the first to the second installment, adding things such as a cover system and simplifying the weapon aiming to make it more like a...

Games Are Not Funny
Oct 24, 2011
Debate: Games aren’t funny. Many moons have passed since I last soiled myself laughing because of a quirky one-liner from a video game’s jackass anti-hero. Poop references aside, quick-witted intentional humor is a scarce resource in modern times collectively – not simply games. But do video games, a medium once teeming with gut-bustingly beautiful...
Final Fantasy XIII-2 Goes Western? Dialogue Options and More
Oct 14, 2011
This weekend is New York City’s Comic Convention and Square Enix was on hand to showcase their latest demo for Final Fantasy XIII-2. I was lucky enough to get on line as soon the showfloor opened. This proved critical, as many were turned down once general admission was let in. The thirty minute demo starts off with our heroes Noel, Serah and Mog battling a colossal creature known as Atlus. Noel, your typical wavy haired Final Fantasy protagonist dashes toward the creature with reckless abandon. Serah, a recurring character from XIII, provides cover fire using Mog who can transform into a bow.
The Problem With Metacritic: A MetaCritique
Aug 10, 2011
As both a game reviewer and psychologist in training, I admit I have a love-hate relationship with Metacritic. On one hand, the website is well respected by numerous developers, fellow reviewers and consumers, who value it as the “go to place” for information on every game under the sun. On the other hand, there are just as many developers, reviewers and consumers that call the site trash and far less flattering terms. As game reviewer I cannot help but wish that my reviews would be included in their metric, but as a psychologist I am prone to question just how valid that metric really is.
A Brief Introduction to… Shin Megami Tensei (Part 2: A History)
Aug 5, 2011
In my last post, we took a look at the significant gameplay elements of the Shin Megami Tensei series in the RPG landscape. While this is going to be my usual approach to these articles, MegaTen is a bit of a personal favorite of mine, and has just too many releases and too much history behind it to pack into one article. Today I’ll be taking a look at the...
The “Truth” Behind Nintendo’s RPGs
Jul 11, 2011
Editor’s Note: This article is meant to be humorous and is not a serious piece of news. Nintendo of America has been eerily silent concerning the release of three big-budget RPGs for American audiences – Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story, and Pandora’s Tower. Despite having already been localized for European audiences, they shockingly...
A Brief Introduction to… Shin Megami Tensei
Jul 4, 2011
Hi, everyone, and welcome back to NMGB! One of my big gaming interests is niche titles and lesser-known series, so, among other things, I’ll be covering these on my weekly posts. Have you ever run into a game or series that makes you wonder where the best place is to begin, or maybe just what makes those games unique? That’s what I hope to answer...
